2021.03.03 20:56 bakwards Changing economics of warfare through early-mid-late game
Hi all
I just finished a LOOONG game of PA, over two hours long. It was fun for the most part, but I think we all know how the pace of the game changes throughout:
From the frantic early game with lots of harassments and chances of cheese, through a more tempered tactical midgame with larger engagements and maneuvering coming into play, to the slow trudge of late game (especially on multiplanet maps) where you struggle to even scout properly and frontlines become entrenched, ending in a sudden snipe or cataclysmic explosion.
The scope of gameplay is amazing in this game, but I feel like the balance of economies between offence and defense, tip too heavily towards the defensive side as the game progresses. The end game oftentimes seizes to be fun, and during our game one player reported he was bored and our streamer had to leave because the game was so long. This is unfortunate, because the main premise of the endgame, a strong entrenched position with a hectic search for strategic openings, has the potential to be really fun.
I bet this changes if you get better than I am - I just recently got into silver on the ladder, and haven't played many FFA's, so finding the openings is really hard for me. However, I have a theory that the reason the game turns to a grind is because of a changing economics of warfare: Defense becomes relatively more powerful as the game progresses, and the scale of tension tips towards the turtly gameplay favored by Supreme Commander and Total Annihilation. I feel like this is a shame, but I know a lot of people enjoy this type of gameplay a lot, so maybe there's a reason for it.
I love that there is no max cap on units, but I feel like this is one of the main reasons the game slows down. If you can just keep building defensive units which are more efficient as a factor of price, you will win any trade made with your opponent. When the map is covered in defenses, the composition and maneuvering doesn't matter as much.
Maybe I'm just trying to explain away my poor understanding of the game, but it seems to me it would be interesting to apply something like a "logistics upkeep" on unused units. Or could someone tell where to find the best strategies for breaking a planetary lockdown?

2021.03.03 20:56 peruanToph General thoughts about Taliyah this S11 (state, problems and riot PoV)
Item choices and diversity per game:Taliyah, in therms of variety of items, is one of the mages that got more affected in a positive way. Last season our build couldn’t go too far away from GLP + orb + Dcap, but this season, it feels like all mythics are created for her, thanks to her own flexibility as a champ; being the only mage in the game who has Burst damage without sacrificing DPS and also, having some utility to help her team.
Ludens with that movement speed and extra magic penetration. Liandry with the burn and % magic penetration in-combat. Evefrost with the CC and HP...all of them are good options for her, and its up to you to choose the correct item that game.
Now with Legendary items...the overall reduction of the amount of mana in the game gutted her, so you are forced to build a Seraph or at least a non-upgrade tear if you want to clear waves properly and fight tanks without getting oom every fight.
The amounts of burst damage and healing force you to build deffensive items early on (verdant, armguard) and greavious wounds, making it a little bit harder to reach your powerspike successfully and delaying so hard, good items like Dcap, Void, Cosmic Drive, Rylai and Horizon. Its a bit frustrating to be honest.
So, as TL;DR of this topic, I’d say Taliyah first item is very satisfying, but after that, its no longer.
Matchups and role into the game:Last season Taliyah jungle was almost dead. The clear speed early on the game was a shame, being one of the slowests in the game. Then, the 10.25 buff happened and all turned around. She became the strongest junglers in the game, and even after the last nerfs she is still abused by proplayers and high elo/smurfs to climb up fast.
But while it increased the amount of people who was trying her out in jungle, the amount of people playing her in midlane was decreasing, reaching a today’s 0,2% from 0,4% of last season.
On top of that, her hardest matchups became even harder, to the point all of them are currently A+/S tier picks. Katarina, Zed, Fizz, Kassadin...all of them now deal more damage, have better scaling through the game and are better picks into the ADC meta we are. And also, the nerf to roamers in midlane hurts her a lot, making it even harder to roam without losing a lot of gold.
As a TL;DR of this topic, I’d say I am disappointed with the balance decisions of Riot Games between midlane and jungle
Riot brashly ignoring what we want and focusing on “what would make her popular”Like do I have to elaborate this topic? All of us know that Riot doesn’t care what we want or need as mains of Taliyah, they only want to make her more popular so they gain more money via skins. Whitewashing, same-face syndrome of the rest of woman champs, exalting her breast...we all know what is happening in that company.
The unforgivable speach of RiotPhreak calling her more popular than Yasuo and broken for having 52% winrate in midlane with 0,2% pick rate, the abysmal ignorance of any rioter of the state of the midlane in general, they shitting in ourselves, the consumers of their game...all of that is just insane if we are talking about a 11 y/o billion dollar company.
